CT Trail

Carolyn’s Trail… aka…the Connector Trail

This trail at Washoe County’s Rancho San Rafael Park was made possible by Nevada State Lands Bond Question 1 funds and spearheaded and organized by Washoe County Rec Planner - Carolyn Poissant in the fall of 2007. Money in this grant will pay for securing the non-motorized zone around Keystone Canyon with barriers and signage. The CT Trail was the trail component, a long standing community desire to have and east-west trail connection along the base of Peavine to Verdi.

Sweco trail dozer
This 1.5 mile trail from Evans to Keystone Canyon was cut with a Sweco Trail Dozer in two days. Powered by a 4 cylinder diesel motor and weighing approximately 9000 lbs, the Sweco can cut and move a lot of dirt fast.

With a four wide blade, a skilled operator cuts an out sloping bench with periodic grade reversals or grade dips for drainage.

In this case, the majority of the finish work was preformed by hand by volunteers. With a defined critical edge and thoroughly dispersed down slope, the trail seems to narrow as a burn line develops and meanders on the out sloping bench cut.

More finish work and reseeding and planting of sage and bitter brush make the disturbance look minimal (after six months).

And lastly, jute netting is put on top of the old road scars for slope rehabilitation.

And presto, the Biggest Little City gets a nice new trail connection!
