New trail in the works

peavine

The Poedunks have been busy since the beginning of the year to make a new legal trail on Peavine possible. Since then we have incorporated, received non-profit status, successfully applied for a NV State Trails grant and will be signing a Volunteer Agreement with the USFS to make it possible to do volunteer projects on the mountain.

The State Trails Grant will provide funding to hire out the construction of a new trail on Peavine scheduled to begin in mid to late October of this year. In preparation for this we will be hiking the proposed “*Halo” trail alignment in 2 mile sections to further refine the trail layout.

If you are interested in hiking the new trail alignment and learning about trail layout and design, we will be meeting and hiking on the following Wednesday evenings.

Halo Hikes – Wednesdays @ 5:30 pm

  • August 13 – Section 1: meet at WEST Keystone Canyon TH (at the end of Leadership Parkway off North McCarran)
  • August 20 – Section 2: meet at EAST Keystone Canyon TH
  • August 27 – Section 3: meet at Hoge Road TH ( west on Hoge of North Virginia Street)

Be prepared for cross country hiking, suggest wearing hiking boots, long pants, bring sunscreen and water. Meet at 5:30 pm, hiking by 5:45 pm and get back to trailhead around 8:30 pm.

*The Halo Trail came out of the USFS 2004 Peavine Roads and Recreation Strategy, establishing a non-motorized zone around Keystone Canyon and this 6.5 mile long trail segment. Working with the USFS, the Washoe County Parks Department also has a grant to help sign and block off the designated non-motorized zone. Although Halo Trail grant will provide funds to hire the Nevada Conservation Corps (NCC) to build the new trail, we will looking for volunteers this fall to help with the new trail construction when necessary and to help with the boundary signage, barricades and roads reclamation.
