You may have been noticing some heavy equipment and big rocks appearing on Peavine lately. It is part of the USFS Carson Road Rehabilitation Project. The project consists of rehabilitating specific roads and to make them inaccessible to motorized travel. It includes establishing road closures using rock barriers, minimizing the effects of surface run-off in disturbed areas, and re-establishing vegetation with specified seed mixes.

An iron post fence erected near the Hoge Road Trail Head denotes the northern boundary of the Keystone Canyon Recreation Area, a 900 acre non-motorized zone designated in the USFS Peavine Roads and Recreation Plan.

The current project will decomission approximately 12.5 miles of roads, the placement of boulder barriers at 42 sites, and the ripping and seeding of approximately 27, 960 l.f. of disturbed areas.

In addition, more signage has been placed to show routes closed (left) and open (right) to motorized travel.

The work is being performed by a private contractor under contract from the USFS Humboldt-Toiyabe Carson Ranger District. The main areas of work are in the Hoge Road, Horizon Hills, Peavine Peak Road, and Dog Valley areas and are expected to be completed by mid July.

We would like to thank all our trail partners, the USFS Carson District of the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest, Nevada State Parks, the Nevada Conservation Corps, and Washoe County Parks for all the time and effort in this project. At the celebration/ride/hike and bbq we were greatly appreciative to have in attendance: Genny Wilson, Ed Moning, and Dan Morris from the USFS; Randy Moore from NV State Parks, Phil McDonald and Justina Fedorchuk from the NCC, Bob Harmon from Washoe County Parks, KOLO 8, Poedunk board members; Dale Beesmer, Randy Meyer, Lee Turner, Kristi Stewart, Steve Cleek, ride leaders Curtis Johnson and Allen Hill; Roger and Ellen Jacobson from Reno KiwanisBikes.Org; and hikers, bikers, local residents and trail users: Darren Young, Jason Susslin, Mickey Hazlewood (The Nature Conservancy), Joi Giffin, Jim Crompton, Andrew Valestrino, Fritz Fleischman, Wayne Mackey, John Anderson, Craig Vandehurst, Mike Hardy, Nicj Jordan, Patrick Lassher, Dan Keller, Andy Knox, Eric Frudder, John Hurley and about ten others who were gracious enough to partake.

We also would to thank a few persons who could not make the event, but who were crucial in this projects success. From the USFS: Marnie Bonesteel and Steve Hale, from NV State Parks: Jenny Scanland and the State Rec Trails Committe, from the Great Basin Institute: Jerry Keir, Matt Johnson and Grant Neejdlo, from Washoe County: Carolyn Poissant, Cheryl Surface, Doug Doolittle and Lynda Nelson.

@ West Keystone Canyon TH
(past the East Keystone Canyon TH at the END of Leadership Pkwy)

Join us to thank our trail partners, volunteers and trail supporters. We’ll have a brief acknowledgement ceremony then head out to hike and bike the recently completed section of the Halo Trail, followed up some post food and drink (ala TNRG!).

Come to show our trail partners (USFS, Washoe County Parks, NV State Trails and the Nevada Conservation Corps) that we really appreciate them working with mountain bikers and local trail users to build legal, fun and sustainable trails on Peavine.
This is an oppurtunity to find out where the trail starts and ends, and to get in a fun evining hike or bike.

Will be offering these hike/bike options with ride leaders:
1) Halo Hike/ Short Bike: 3.5 miles from West Keystone TH (approx. 1.5 hours
2) Halo Medium Bike: 8.5 miles (approx. 2 hours)
3) Halo Long Bike: 12. 5 miles (approx. 2.5 hours)
4) Hike Shuttle/Hike Down : we’ll shuttle you up to a high point on the trail for a spectacular view and then you can either ride back or hike down 1 mile of the trail (please make sure you RSVP at poedunknv@gmail.com for this option so we make sure we have enough vehicles). Hope to see you then!
