So it’ll soon be summer again. Don’t let the wind and snow fool you. We’ll take our shovels and beat winter back. For a few months at least. And with the coming of the warm weather, comes spring cleaning. So please join us again for the Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful Clean Up Day on Peavine!

We’ll be meeting up @ The Raleigh Heights location to help scour the open space areas there for junk, tires, appliances, mattresses, shotgun shells, magazines, and undifferentiated crap and haul it back to a dumpster.

Every year we make some great progress with cleaning up a different area of the awesome open space where we build, ride, and run trails. Every year we fill the dumpster. This year, however, you’ll have the chance to score one of these SWEET Poedunks T-Shirts! See you out there!

We had a nice day of trail work at Washoe County’s Galena Park this past Saturday.

Led by the Nevada Conservation Corps and in partnership with Washoe County Parks, work began on a new trail connection that will provide access from the Galena Recreation Complex to the Jone-Whites Trail. It will also be used as a means to abandon a current social trail that runs right through the middle of a local archaeological site.

Volunteers and NCC crews cleared the corridor by moving dead fall, rocks and began cutting bench.  With over 50 persons, almost a half mile of trail was roughed out by lunch time.

It was great to meet Matt Johnson (NCC Director), Matt Miller (NCC Volunteer Coordinator), and Grant Nejedlo (NCC Trail Crew Coordinator) of the Nevada Conservation Corps. They provided the tools, crew leaders and post work bbq, drinks and raffle.  We are looking forward to working with the NCC later on in the year on Peavine, more details to come as they get finalized.

Thanks to event sponsors : Reno Bike Project, Recycled Records, College Cyclery and Ahhh Massage for their generous donations for the post work raffle.  Also thanks to the Michael Henderson, Quinn McLaughlin, Jim Crompton, Randy Mayer and Dale Beesmer for representing the Poedunks.

 We had a good turn out of mountain bikers at the Kiowa Pond site on the East side of Peavine.  We started with some flap jacks at 3 Trees and then met at the starting point promptly at 8:30 am.  At first glance the area did not look to bad, but the deeper you dove, your bag soon filled up as well as the accompyning pick ups and  trucks. 

Thanks to those below we helped fill up three – 30 yard dumpsters with trash.  Kristi and her crew alone picked up and trailered out 18 tires !

Wayne Mackey’s truck full again! This is in the Raleigh Heights area which still needs a lot of attention.  We’ll see if we can target this area next year.

This should prove to be a fun race again this year. A few riders went out from Reno last year and enjoyed it thoroughly. It is put on by the Great Basin Trails Alliance a group which has done a lot of trail work out in a place where riding isn’t nearly as popular as it is here. I hope to buy a pitcher of beer and learn a thing or two about building trails.

• An enduro format mountain bike event. Timed sections mostly downhill, combined time wins.
• Men’s and women’s events for all classes.
• New fun ride class that is shorter in length and less climbing than the beginner class.
• Beginner Class: 17.5 miles, 2,300′ elevation gain, 2 timed sections.
• Sport Class: 26.6 miles, 3,500′ elevation gain, 3 timed sections.
• Expert Class: 33.3 miles, 5,400′ elevatin gain, 5 timed sections.
• Camping in downtown Ely!

P-Quad #1 a success! Saturday May 12, 2007 Poeville, NV:

In support of the Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup The Poedunks hauled some major trash off the trails of Peavine Mountain.

Fueled by pancakes, bacon and black coffee 15 – 20 mountain bikers set out to scrub the mountain’s singletrack and non-motorized zone of litter. Utilizing people power not horsepower several of the crew overloaded their bikes, trailers and packs with everything from auto parts…

…to shotgun shells hauling several yards of trash to the dumpsters at The West Keystone Canyon Trail Head. A big SHOUT goes out to all who contributed their time and energy!

We cleaned up the shooting gallery along the “tad-dunbar-can’t-see-his-feet” trail, fenders and debris near the top of the Evan’s creek switchbacks, wood from the start of the Entrail, the RGJ newspaper vendor south of Hoge. Several of these areas were in the Non-Motorized zone and we removed all of the material by bike having fun, improving our resource and proving that bikes are an extremely useful tool for trail maintenance.
